When to Let a Wheel Decide (and When Not To)
Updated 2026-10-03
Some decisions are not worth the energy they take. What to eat, which film to watch, who goes first: these are choices where any option is fine and the real cost is the time spent deciding. A random wheel is a quick way to end that deliberation. It is not a good way to make every decision, so here is how to tell the difference.
Where randomness helps
- Low-stakes choices where every option is acceptable, such as lunch or a film
- Breaking ties between equally good options
- Sharing small jobs fairly among equals
- Escaping decision paralysis when you have been going back and forth for too long
- Games and party activities where chance is the point
Where it does not
Do not use a wheel for choices about health, money, safety or legal matters, or for decisions where one option is clearly better and someone will be affected by getting it wrong. Hiring and promotion decisions should rest on merit, not chance. If you notice you are dreading one of the slices, the choice probably matters more than a wheel should decide.
Set up options that make a spin worthwhile
- Remove any option you would be unhappy to get. A wheel should only contain acceptable choices.
- Aim for two to eight options. Fewer than that and you can simply choose, and more makes the decision slower.
- Make the options specific, such as the name of a restaurant rather than just dinner out.
- Agree beforehand that you will accept the result. This is what makes the spin work.
Shortlist first, spin second
For bigger decisions, use criteria to narrow the field and let the wheel choose only among the finalists. For example, list ten holiday destinations, drop the ones outside your budget, then spin among the rest. You keep control over what is acceptable, and the wheel removes the argument over what is best.
Notice your reaction
A well-known side benefit of leaving a choice to chance is what it tells you about your own preference. If a wheel lands on an option and you feel a pang of disappointment, that feeling is information. You can still accept the result, or you can spin again knowing which option you secretly wanted.
